Huntington County's Industrial Wind Turbine Setback
vs. the Setbacks of 5 Neighboring Counties

Posted 3/21/2015 | HCCC Webmaster

After looking at the map below, if you find yourself saying, "One of these things is not like the other," you are not alone.  For the past year, HCCC and citizens throughout Huntington County have called, emailed and poured into public meetings to make exactly that point to both the Huntington Co. Plan Commission, and the 3 Commissioners.  Stacks of evidence and supporting documents have been provided to clearly demonstrate why the Huntington County wind ordinance is inadequate, and why stronger safeguards are needed for the protection of our citizens.

Huntington County's Industrial Wind Turbine Setback

Consider setbacks
If the wind ordinance as currently proposed is passed into law by our Commissioners(Larry Buzzard, Tom Wall and Rob Miller), Huntington County will have the weakest industrial wind turbine setback protection of any of the 5 surrounding counties!

Whitely County, which has a population density almost identical to Huntington County, chose to provide their own citizens with a setback protection of more than 2 1/2 times that of Huntington County!  And even though Wabash and Wells counties both have smaller population densities than Huntington Co., their county officials also chose to enact much stronger setback protections for their own citizens.

It was this knowledge that caused one resident from Warren, IN to ask, "IS IT FAIR?" many times throughout his presentation to the Huntington Co. PC this past November 11, 2014.  .....Is it fair???

At that same meeting in November, another citizen presented detailed setback data from 12 nearby counties who ALL have enacted stronger setback protections for their own citizens.  She closed by asking, "What have the other county officials learned that you have not yet?"  .....Excellent question.

During the 3/11/2015 Huntington Co. Plan Commission meeting,  HCCC Attorney Stephen Snyder detailed for nearly 40 minutes the many reasons why the current wind ordinance is inadequate for the health, safety and well being of Huntington Co. residents.  Commissioners Larry Buzzard and Rob Miller were both in attendance.  Mr. Snyder gave an excellent and very thought provoking presentation, drawing upon his 35 years of experience in planning, zoning and land use law.  His recommendation is a minimum setback of 2640 ft for Huntington County.  But unfortunately he too was ignored by the Plan Commission, and a vote was hastily taken to return the proposed wind ordinance to the Commissioners without considering any of Mr. Snyder's recommendations.
(Thank you to the 2 PC members who courageously voted "No")

The Huntington County Commissioners will be meeting again on Monday, March 23, 2015 @ 8:30 AMIt is expected they will be voting on the current wind ordinance proposal, which still includes a 1000 ft industrial wind turbine setback for the residents of Huntington County.  Please attend this meeting if possible, and show your support for enacting much stronger protections for the people of Huntington County.
